our mission

Creating engaging, enriching culture at Catholic schools

A truly healthy and holistic school must be strategic—not left up to chance. It must successfully incorporate deep spiritual growth, rich classical education, and school culture that creates and nurtures a thriving community. That’s where the St. John Henry Newman Institute comes in. The Institute is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to implementing strategic transformation initiatives within Catholic schools.

Focusing on What Matters

Administrators of Catholic schools are faced with an ocean of competing priorities on a daily basis. Keeping up with day-to-day communications, emergencies, and urgent requests can take up every available second. Often, the tyranny of the urgent means the important can be left to chance. Of course, in a Catholic school there is nothing more important than spiritual development, community, and education.

The Problem

Measuring Key Elements

Furthermore, these important elements are difficult to measure. As a result, many Catholic schools selectively focus on one element. They may focus on liturgy without community, overburdening students who feel stifled and uninspired. They may focus on building community without education, producing students who have fun but are educationally underdeveloped. Or, they may focus on education to the neglect of spiritual formation, becoming functionally synonymous with any secular academy. This causes imbalance.

The goal is ultimately to create students who have a deep desire to know God, an experience of the liturgical elements that channel their faith, and create a thriving school culture that students, faculty and parents love.

Our Founder

Founded by Rev. Robert A. Sirico, the Institute has demonstrated a proven track record of creating healthy, vibrant schools where students enjoy the process of learning and growing in faith.St. John Henry Newman, the institute’s namesake, was canonized as a saint in 2019, and made a cardinal in 1879. Living from 1801 to 1890, St. Cardinal John Henry Newman was a theologian, academic, and author who was a convert to the Catholic Church from Anglicanism. As a Catholic convert, Newman had a special appreciation for liturgical tradition. A traveler and poet, Newman’s writings became highly influential, for both their doctrinal depth and in their comprehension of beauty. The St. John Henry Newman Institute honors this tradition by reveling in the beauty of mystery, while embracing doctrinal, structural educational models.

If you are a Catholic School administrator, don’t leave the spiritual development and educational culture of your school up to chance.
